The Overview
Smith + Nephew set a goal to leverage an acquired physical therapy (PT) app that was in development. We needed to create an app that not only provided exercises for therapy but also allowed the user to mirror the plan on screen so that a clinician can track their physical movement as well as their overall progress.
The Process
In designing Aria Home PT, our physical therapy application, we followed the UX design process, which involved research, ideation, prototyping, testing, and implementation. To improve the dashboard's accessibility for older users, we organized both a summative study and a heuristic study. Through the summative study, we gathered feedback from older users to assess overall usability and effectiveness, identifying pain points and areas for improvement. The heuristic study evaluated the design against established usability heuristics and best practices, highlighting potential issues not immediately obvious from user feedback. By combining both approaches, we gained a comprehensive understanding of where the dashboard fell short in terms of accessibility and developed specific design solutions. By prioritizing accessibility and the needs of older users, we created a more inclusive and user-friendly app that catered to a wider range of people.
The Result
I'm happy to report that our efforts to improve Aria Home PT's accessibility have been successful. In addition to the insights gained from the summative and heuristic studies, we were also able to rebrand the application and create a more interactive AI assistant, further enhancing the overall usability of the platform.
By using the feedback gathered in the summative study, we identified several key areas where improvements could be made, such as making the dashboard more intuitive and user-friendly. We used the insights from the heuristic study to further refine the design, taking into account established usability best practices and heuristics.
The enhancement of the AI assistant has made the application even more engaging and accessible, providing users with real-time support and guidance as they work through their physical therapy routines. Overall, we're thrilled with the results of our design process, and are confident that Aria Home PT is now better than ever at meeting the needs of older users and others who require accessible, intuitive digital experiences.
