IAM Robotics Agera Project

The Overview

IAM Robotics has created a robot to help with warehouse picking which would create a more efficient warehouse environment. As a Technical Product Manager & Senior UX Designer I was tasked with creating a mobile app and web application which would interact with the robot and pickers on the warehouse floor. This allows supervisors and managers to see what is happening across the facilities. I saw the creation of the product from concept to deployment.

I was one half of the design team and over the course of the year at IAM I grew tremendously. Some key achievements were :

- Implemented a design system. This helped product and engineering understand why and how we implement our design assets and components.

- Established a design process. This allowed our team to create more structure within our design process as well as create visibility for product and engineering into our sprints.

- Improved usability across the platform. Usability tests weren't conducted on the barebones system that existed prior. Since we established our UX processes we have implemented UX research and usability tests.

The Process

Before IAM had a design team, UI developers were left to create mockups without a design system or UX research. I started by meeting with product and engineering to understand technical and product limitations to gain a understanding of what currently exists. This allowed me to find the constraints to build the foundation for our design system.

Our research encompassed:

-Understanding competitor's product
-Understanding user goals and needs
-Determine the success of tasks measured

After this we were able to prioritize issues and narrow down the scope of work for MVP and begin wireframing.

The Result & takeaways

Since the implementation of the design, our simulations have shown that there would be a 20+% increase in productivity and efficiency. Additionally, Our UX team has received positive feedback from users about the simplification of the picking process from users and potential buyers of the company.

Some key takeaways from this project are:

-Create a strategic plan to launch an MVP. This helps deal with out-of-scope requests that could potentially derail the project and helps deliver a quality product in time.

-User testing doesn't end after development. Design is a constant iteration of improving the experience for the end user. Always find ways to collect and listen to your user's feedback.

-Involve engineering upfront. This helps to reduce any rework later on as an understanding of the technical limitations upfront will help to inform your design strategy.
